Dick Delson

Dick Delson has extensive public relations, advertising, promotional and marketing experience and expertise. He has written for film, television, radio and the press. In 2003, he was one of only three recipients of the prestigious Golden Satellite Award from the International Press Academy for Outstanding Service to the Entertainment Industry.

Delson has been involved in high level policy and project planning and execution for entities such as Walt Disney Productions, Filmways Pictures, MCA, Inc./Universal Pictures and the Executive Branch of the Federal Government, Puerto Rico's Industrial and Tourism program "Operation Bootstrap," and the Jamaica, West Indies Industrial Development Corporation.

In addition, Delson has provided publicity for the People's Choice Awards and strategized numerous Oscar & Golden Globe campaigns. Two years ago, motion picture clients scored a record 40 nominations in the 2002 Academy Award competition and won 9, including 8 for Miramax's Best Picture win "Chicago." Delson also worked on the film "Gangs of New York." Most recently, films publicized by Delson included "Kill Bill" Volumes 1 & 2.In 2001, motion picture clients scored a cumulative 31 nominations in the Academy Award Competition and won 5. The films he represented included releases by New Line, Miramax and Sony Pictures. They included the films "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "I Am Sam" for New Line; "In The Bedroom," "Amelie," "Iris" and "Bridget Jones' Diary" for Miramax; and "Ali" for Sony Pictures. Eleven of the 20 possible acting nominations (for Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress) were from titles represented by Dick Delson.

Personalities have most recently included James Coburn, whose Oscar campaign for "Affliction," Delson successfully designed and executed. Prior to forming his own highly successful agency, Delson was National Director of Publicity/Promotion and Television Advertising for Walt Disney Productions where he created and executed publicity campaigns for "Tron," "Tex" and "Fantasia." He also created publicity/promotion and television advertising campaigns that included trailers, television spots and video press kits for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Never Cry Wolf," "Running Brave" and "Splash."

As National Director of Publicity for Filmways Pictures, Delson was responsible for the publicity and promotion for "Dressed to Kill," "Blow Out," "Deathwish II," "Comin' at Ya!" (the first major 3-D film in more than 25 years), "Four Friends" and "Ragtime," which was produced by Filmways and later distributed by Paramount Pictures.

At MCA, Inc. Universal Pictures, his publicity and promotional credits include "Airport," "Jaws," "Jaws II" (including the Great White Shark hunt off the coast of Montauk, Long Island), "The Deer Hunter," "American Graffiti," "The Sting," "Smokey and the Bandit," "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "Animal House" (including the toga party craze that swept college campuses throughout the United States and Canada). He initiated the "Fortune Magazine" cover story on MCA, Inc. -- "A Company with a $100 Million Solution Looking for a Problem."

Delson's press contacts and personal friendships extend to the executive producer and/or producer of every national television talk and/or news show, i.e., "60 Minutes," "The Today Show," etc., as well as most local television shows. The same is true of national and local radio personalities, as well as their producers, and of key entertainment editors and writers of nearly every magazine and newspaper of importance in America, including such publications as "Time," "Newsweek," "The New York Times," "The Washington Post" and "The Los Angeles Times." Additionally, his contacts include many of the news and business editors of publications throughout the United States.

In 1968, Delson was on special assignment to the White House to create and put into operation President Lyndon B. Johnson's Foreign Visitor Program, designed to reduce the U.S. balance of payments deficit as it related to international travel.

Delson conceived and authored the report of the President's Industry-Government Special Task Force on Travel which devised and implemented measures to increase inbound tourism, (i.e., eliminated visa requirements, introduced one-stop inspection procedures, reduced travel costs, expanded the money exchange system), as well as the report of The Presidential Commission on Travel which reorganized the United States Travel Service and developed models for a National Tourist Office and a private travel institute. His staff numbered over 30 people, and was increased when outside consulting firms were retained for special assignments.

He also wrote speeches for Secretary of the Treasury Henry Fowler, and for Robert McKinney, the former Ambassador to Switzerland and Austria who served as Chairman of the Foreign Visitors Program.

Additionally, Delson worked for three daily newspapers as a reporter and copy editor including "The New York Post," the CBS Television Network's public relations department, and for both the Mutual Broadcasting System and WOR Radio as a writer/news reporter.

Delson has supervised the press activities of hundreds of major motion pictures, independent films, television series and specials involving campaigns for Oscars & Golden Globes in the Academy Award competitions of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In addition, he has handled corporate financial publicity, public relations for MCA, sports marketing, public relations and publicity for health issues, book authors and professional athletes as well as motion picture personalities such as Sylvester Stallone, James Coburn, Michael Constantine and numerous others. He has been involved in hundreds of campaigns of the Directors Guild of America Awards, the Writers Guild of America Awards, Producers Guild Awards, Casting Society Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Art Directors Guild Awards, British Academy of Film & Television Awards and Independent Film Awards.
